Organizational Impacts of Supply Chain Management
Verfasser
Sebastian BielskiKurzbeschreibung
Our analysis has come to the basic result that, concerning the impact logistic theories have on organization of supply chains, there is nothing like one best solution. Attention has to be paid in particular to the management of the different business processes, goods and people involved in the value adding process. In fact, each organizational block (one entity within a supply chain) of the supply chain has its specific requirements. The flow of goods connected with the production process needs standardized, low cost routines which can be best described by the Transaction Cost Theory. On the other hand, complex and uncertain activities, like for instance cooperation within the R&D sector, would suffer from the appliance of this theory. The creation of organizational boundaries, as suggested by the TCT, in the case of high motivation cost would be counterproductive and ineffective.
In contrast to the TCT the Network Theory offers an interesting and appealing approach for the organization of such activities. The knowledge-transfer is easier and more productive in networks where specific resources build up the core competencies of the companies. A good example for that is the R&D platform, where very often the best technical solutions and innovations are created through cooperation between several firms. In this aspect the Network Theory and the RBT seem to be very close due to the concept of resource which can be applied to both, tangible and intangible assets, including human factors.
Within supply chain management one can obviously find the chance to apply all three theories we have discussed above, in order to capture the advantages of each of them. The key aspect of our research deals with inter-firm relationships. If for example two different firms have exchange processes on different levels - for instance both R&D and basic production he - it will be an advantage to manage those processes with help of different organizational theories. Though, one should always keep in mind that these theories are made for the description of real processes and not for arrangement. So, we have therefore come to the conclusion that it is not possible for us to give any clear advises about which theory should be applied for which situation.
